Alakazam Magic

(Based on 1 review)

A deck of cards is removed from a card-case which is shown to be empty (can you see where this is going?!) The magician says that to ensure that he cannot cheat he will perform his next trick with only one hand. A card is selected and lost in the deck. The magician, despite his earlier claims, fails to find the card. The cards are now dealt face up onto the spectator's hand and one card bears a message, "Look In the Card Case!" The magician directs attention to the card case, which has been in view the entire time – with empty hands he opens it and inside is the selection!!

I'm usually skeptical of these little tricks that come in fancy packaging. I was all ready to rip this one apart. Alas, I'm afraid I can't do that. For my money, this is a pretty damned good trick!

The description of this trick is accurate (a novelty these days). The audience sees an empty box (after removing the cards, of course). The selection process is very fair, as is the face-up dealing. There are no questionable moves. Your hands are plainly shown before picking up the box and opening it to reveal their selected card. If only the card could be signed…

I should make two additional comments here. First, I don't see any reason to keep the "one hand" premise. It seems goofy to me and isn't necessary for the method or the effect.

Secondly, I think the "failure effect" part of this could also be cut. The magician fails to make the card jump to the top of the deck. Instead it turns over in the deck (actually the "Look in the Card Case" card). Why not just drop the ambitious plot and just propose to make the card turn over in the deck?
