Notes from Daniel about TWO

Through natural progress in magic, my performances since ONE took a more advanced turn in my approach to modern and close-up magic, and an equal U-turn in my approach to Mentalism. ONE saw the Mentalist in me take on a deck of cards and resulted in some seriously realistic magic, TWO, although aiming for the same, leans more toward the Street Magician in me and goes way back to my routs as a deceptive artist.

TWO, is a set of notes not for the novice, some of the effects are only for the advanced performer and some are very risky, but still amazingly rewarding non the less.

TWO definitely shows my more gritty side of performing magic and cuts out all the verbal crap which although can be rewarding, is parted to make way for pure mind-boggling impact magic, which is what street magic is all about.

I'd only recommend this work to the experienced magician, novice/beginners may be best starting as intended with ONE.

Daniel Madison is a creative guy and his style appeals to many but he is always kind of hit and miss with me. There are some great workers in these notes but few are very original and in many cases better versions with more complete routines have been published by other performers.

Eccentric Tourist: This is the appearance of a selected card in full view. This is very similar to a card under box both in method and boldness.

Blaze 1: Here you have an interesting effect where a selected card seems to burn a hole in itself while in the spectators hand. You get a glimpse here at Madison’s funky idea of mentalism. He gets really dramatic here, he says things like “relies on the methods used by mentalists, in that misdirection must be purely natural...” when he really means that you will be using suggestion and misdirection to achieve this effect.

Blaze 1.1: Here a selection is burnt through the middle while in the middle of the deck in the spectators hand. This is simple to do and fairly powerful.

Blaze 1.2: Here the selection is held by the magician sandwiched in between 2 kings. While it is sandwiched it is burnt through. This uses a handful of funky sleights to do some fairly tough stuff out in the open. This is probably not the best version of the effect.

Blaze 1.3: A card is held by the magician and caused to be burnt through while held in his hands. This is a simple version of the effect for sure but I don’t think that it is as strong as Blaze 1.2

Blaze 2: This is very similar to a Jay Sankey idea without the simplicity that Jay offers. Basically a card is selected and held in the spectators hand, upon opening it there is a burnt mark on the card. If you want to perform this effect I know that Daniel Garcia, Alex Pandrea and Jay Sankey all have more developed routines using practically the same gimmick.

Blaze 3: A burn mark appears on a card revealing an earlier selection. This is nice, it is similar to Will Tsai’s effect Trace but of course it predates tsai’s effect.

Some Bad Hat Henry: The deck vanishes from a hat leaving just the selected card. You will need an opaque solid hat for this and a lot of guts. This is very bold and I can’t see many magicians getting away with it.

F'inGAces: This is startling for sure, if you can pull it off. Basically the deck vanishes to leave only the 4 aces. I can’t see this working in real life.

One: This is a combination of old moves that when put together become a switch. It is worth noting that the deck needs to be tabled while you perform this switch in the hands.

Through: Card Though Anything: This is a way to make a card with a torn corner penetrate just about anything. This is interesting and I can see it working in the real world.

Prophecy: A word and a card are selected by a spectator. They are both shown to have been predicted by the magician. This is a fun and quick piece of mentalism requiring a pad of paper, the word does appear on the card so it will destroy one card each time you perform.

Stigmata 2: This is a way to temporarily tattoo a prediction on your arm. You may be able to use this in a formal setting but it really cannot be compared to Wayne Houchin’s version of the effect, or any of Houchin’s predecessors. While the effect is the same it now makes a semi permanent mark on your skin that you may have for a couple hours and it will take some time to prepare as well.
Breakout: In this effect the magician pops the center copper piece out of a silver coin. This will work with a “Toony” if you are from Canada or a 2 pound coin if you are like Daniel Madison, from the UK. The explanation is sparse here and I believe this effect has been accomplished before. He basically teaches you how to make the gimmick without any thoughts provided on the actual sleights you need to use.

Repocket: This is a selected card to a spectator's pocket. It works like a faux expose on magic. The magician shows how he might slip a card into his pocket by demonstrating how to do it on a spectator with a shirt pocket. He then makes a card vanish and it appears in the spectator's pocket. This is interesting, it is a little too touchy feely for my tastes. You have to use a spectator with a breast pocket and depending on your performance you may have some angle issues.

Execution: A corner is ripped from a card, it vanishes and appears on the performers necklace. It is then torn from the necklace and restored to the card. I like this, I especially like how it resets instantly. Everything is self contained, that is kind of a trademark of Madison’s work, most everything is completely self contained.

Angle Zero: A corner of a card is torn off and vanished, very cleanly. The corner can be produced from anywhere. This effect has been produced as a download from Theory11 and Ellusionist. I’ve seen work on this in a couple places including Jay Sankey’s Hardcore DVD which was released three years after Madison's notes. Here he lists it almost as a throw away effect, the description is only about a paragraph long.

PRe-match: This is a fun effect where the torn corners of 2 cards transpose and then the cards do the same. This is fairly straight forward here and very slick commercial.
