Uncle Percy's Last Pokerhand Review

For a spooky little packet trick, this one is hard to beat. It's not hard to perform, and therefore it gives you more room for showmanship rather than having to constantly worry about some special move or another. There is basically one moment in the effect that you really have to pay attention to what's going on (and if you miss it, you've blown the whole effect) but other than that it's just fairly easy.

You hand the spectator a clear piece of glass that you say was Uncle Percy's old monocle, or a lens from his glasses, or whatever. They hold it throughout your presentation of Uncle Percy's favorite poker hand, each card with a different color. The poker hand isn't that impressive, but when the spectator chooses red or blue cards to finish it out, the magic occurs. When they open their hand, a word has appeared on the glass (hopefully) and it matches the color they chose.

As I mentioned before, this relies heavily on presentation and there is a decent chance nothing is going to happen with the glass when the spectator opens their hand. If their hand isn't at least a little sweaty or hot, the glass won't steam up. Fortunately this can be fixed simply by breathing on the glass, so it's not a deal-breaker--though the effect is much creepier when the spectator opens their hand and the magic has already occurred. This won't necessarily make your reputation, but for a packet trick that's different it works nicely.
