My Card

Rodger Lovins

(Based on 1 review)
"ONE OF THE VERY BEST BUSINESS CARD EFFECTS I HAVE EVER PERFORMED!"

THEY WILL SAY
"HOW DID YOU DO THAT?"
YOU WILL SAY "HERE'S MY CARD, CALL ME FOR YOUR NEXT EVENT."

Effect

The magician shows the spectator his business card. He tells them, "Printed on the reverse is a prediction." He has the spectator choose a playing card from a packet of four cards. When the prediction printed on the reverse side of the business card is shown, it matches the chosen card! COOL! The chosen card and business card are both placed into the spectators hands. The magician then causes the printed prediction on the back of his business card to vanish and reappear on the back of the chosen playing card! The other three playing cards are turned over to show that no printing is found on them. WOW! The magician then gives the spectator his business card to keep! Your business card is in plain view at all times. It never leaves there sight! Only one business card is used, Yours! No switching of cards. No fancy moves!

This is a great way for you to put your business card into the hands of the spectator to get more bookings!
  • EASY TO DO!
  • NO BUSINESS CARD SWITCH
  • SPECTATOR KEEPS YOUR BUSINESS CARD!
  • WORKS WITH ANY STANDARD SIZE BUSINESS CARDS!
Comes complete with gimmick, special four card packet, business card holder and instruction sheet. BONUS ROUTINE ALSO INCLUDED!

"Every Magician needs a good business card routine. This one is my favorite! I hope it will be your favorite too!"

In this effect a printed prediction on the back of your business card matches a card selected by the spectator. The prediction then vanishes from the back of your card and appears on the back of the spectator’s chosen card.

I have a few concerns about this product. First, the prediction is not impressive, as the spectator can only choose from one of four cards. While there are other strong prediction effects using four cards (notably B’Wave), the force used in “My Card” is handled rather clumsily and there is no reason given to use only four cards. (As opposed to B’Wave, which uses the four cards as the prediction itself.)

Secondly, while the transposition is fairly deceptive, the transposition goes in the wrong direction. The major goal in using a business card in a magic trick is to provide a reason for the spectator to keep your card. One of the most effective ways to do that is by having the card become a physical reminder of the magic that occurred. In “My Card” the prediction vanishes from the business card and appears on the selection. To be most effective, the prediction should travel in the other direction, appearing on the business card itself.

Ironically, the bonus effect included in the instructions is far superior to “My Card.” In the bonus effect you show (for example) the numbers 1 through 4 written on the back of your card. The spectator chooses one of those numbers and when you turn your card back over, the chosen number has vanished. Ironically, this is a great example of how to turn your business card into a physical reminder of the magic that happened.

In “My Card” Mr. Lovins tacks an unmotivated transposition in the dramatically wrong direction onto a weak prediction. The fact is there are a great number of commercially available effects that use business cards, as well as methods and collections of methods that have been released in print, DVD and in magical periodicals. Unfortunately I would recommend most any of them over “My Card.”
