Overview

Dicey Dots is Daryl’s updated version of the classic 'Slip-off Spots', an easy to perform effect that is sure to get great reactions from your audience. A die with black dots freely examined by the spectator is held in their closed fist and when they open their hand, the black dots have vanished from the die only to reappear on a blank white stick held by the magician that was in plain view the whole time.

Effect

An normal die is rolled and shown to the the spectator. The spectator can also roll the die and is then given it to hold tightly in their fist. Next, a 'magical spot remover' which resembles a white bar of plastic is shown blank on both sides. Suddenly, the twenty-one spots from the die visually appear on the spot remover. The spectator is asked to open their hand and the die they have been holding onto the entire time is now “unspotted”. The indentations where the spots remain but the faces are blank. Everything can be openly examined by the spectator themselves. You finish clean and everything can be examined with nothing to find.

Method

If you can do the ‘Paddle Move’ and any type of coin switch (i.e. Bobo Switch) you are good to go, add your own presentation or do what is taught by Daryl or Javier and you have a nice effect you can carry in your pocket. It is easy to learn, easy to do and all the props you are supplied will do all the rest. As for any angle issues, they are the same for any effect using both the moves needed so all in all … good angles. Learning time is minimal.

Product Quality

As all the props provided are made of a durable plastic they wall last forever minus 1 day. I have seen some negative comments on some sites about the quality and I do not agree. Evidently there were some different batches made, the first ones not being of good quality however after a recall and new ones being made to replace those, all is now good. The set I have is perfect, no issues with quality. I also saw some comments about the paddle not rotating properly because it it’s size/finish, I did not have any issues or problems with it.

Ad Copy Integrity

What is demonstrated in the trailer and what is described in the printed ad is very accurate. What you see it what you get and will be able to do. You have access to an online downloadable video which is almost 17 minutes long. No only will you see original footage of Daryl performing this nice little effect but will also teach it. Additionally, Fuenmayer of Murphy's Magic fame will teach you a ‘reverse’ routine as well as a blank card routine with a deck … nice.

Final Thoughts

Dicey Dots is not a main effect, it is something to do quickly in between other effects or as an interlude/transition to something else. With Javier’s ‘reverse’ routine, the effect will be performed in reverse (starting with the blank die then putting the black spots on it - how dice are printed) however the die can only examined at the start, not at the conclusion. Try both and you decide what’s right for you. It is a fun, nice, inexpensive and deceiving little visual effect you can do anywhere, anytime. Recommended.

Overview

Dicey Dots by Daryl is a classic magic routine by the incomparable Daryl Eason. Murphy’s Magic thoughtfully purchased the rights to Daryl’s magic catalog and has slowly been re-releasing his effects to the magic community. Not only does this allow magicians who have been born after the Daryl phenomenon to become familiar with his work but also allows the legacy of Daryl to live on. Dicey Dots is Daryl’s reworking of the classic Slip-off Spots but updates it with smart and more practical props.

Effect

A normal die is taken out and shown to the spectator(s). It can even be handled. The die is casually tossed about by the performer and then handed to the spectator once more to hold on to. The performer then takes out a “spot remover” from his pocket and waves it over the spectator’s closed fist. Instantly, spots appear on the spot remover where there were none before. When the spectator opens their fist, the once normal die is completely blank with no spots but only the recesses where the spots once was.

Method

The method involves a regular die, a gimmick die, and a spot remover which is used as a magic wand. The gimmicked die is exchanged for the real die with a basic coin move known as the Bobo Switch. The wand is used just as a hot rod showing two blank sides and then a spotted side. The moves and handling are basic and can be learned in minutes.

Product Quality

This is the second release of Dicey Dots by Murphy’s. the first release was fraught with manufacturing issues. To Murphy’s credit, they took back all the defectives and ultimately re-released this version which looks very nice. The dice are well made and the “spot remover” matches in color and texture. Along with the product there is an 18 minute online tutorial which not only features Daryl performing and explaining the trick but Javier Fuenmeyer adding some additional tips and routine.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is accurate and although the props are simple, the asking price is a good value.

Final Thoughts

This in itself is not a show stopping routine. It takes only a couple of minutes and it is best suited a a transitional trick.
