Eddy Ray is a talented manipulator, a virtuoso. The DVD is very entertaining to watch and learn from. The picture quality and production values are excellent. The teaching method is also very good, everything is explained well and the pace is perfect. The video has a very serious mood. Eddy seems very serious as he announces the name of each sleight, then very serious again as he announces the explanation. The manipulation looks fun and colorful, why the dramatically stern overtones Magic Makers?
At fist glance a seasoned magician will instantly like that this is nothing more than a jumbo coin instructional DVD. It is not. Eddy Ray uses the special properties of a standard size CD (or DVD) to craft his manipulation. These are original moves, very creative and very entertaining to watch and perform. The moves with a standard 4.5” CD will require practice, big hands are not required, but a long skinny thumb is helpful. There is something here for all skill levels from beginner to advanced. Vanishes, color changes, productions, and transformations are covered. There are stage and close up sleights taught.
Eddy also covers a few manipulations with laserdiscs and 3” mini CD’s. The mini CD manipulations are basically jumbo coin sleights.
The only problem with this video is touchy issue… Eddy Ray is left-handed. This might not seem like a big deal to some, but it really confused me. Sorry Eddy. Of course this is great for left handed people, but most of us are not. I wish Magic Makers would have digitally flipped the image. I am use to learning from videos, and this one confused me. Some people will have no problem with this, but I do. It interferes with the teaching process, ever time Eddy says left I have to think right. Every time Eddy holds his right hand out I have to hold me left.
By the quality of production I get the impression that Magic Makers was trying to make a definitive CD manipulation video. If this was the case a right handed magician should have been used, or the video should have been flipped over. The DVD loses one star for its choice left handed instruction. It looses a half star because of the serious mood of the video.
