Overview

Stone Cold Magic by Jeff Stone is a collection of 17 effects that are entertaining and commercial. Very suitable for walk around or general entertainment, there is enough variety to match nearly everyone’s style. Reflective of the style the DVD was filmed in, the tricks are casual and quick.

Effect

The DVD consists of card tricks of various sorts. There is the use of a couple of odd accessories such as a back scratcher and miniature cards if you are inclined to carry those.

Method

The methods employed are standard card sleights with a couple of odd gimmicks thrown in.

Product Quality

The filming of the DVD is basic with primarily a camera on a tripod and close-up shots where needed. Although not a lavish Hollywood production, the photography was clear, sound excellent and nothing was left out of the explanations. Bonus effects are included on the DVD and you certainly get a lot for the money. I must caution though that for many, the sleights involved may be difficult. Several of the tricks require palming, and although Stone does it very well since his hands are large enough to palm, I myself will not be able to perform several of the tricks due to the fact that I cannot palm a card without is being visible.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is accurate but it would have been nice to mention that this DVD is not for a beginner card magician.

Stone Cold Magic is an excellent project by the one and only Jeff Stone from this very website and also Magic Reviewed (www.magicreviewed.com). The DVD is a series of tricks performed and explained by Stone in a simple table setting. It is almost like a private lesson in which you are taught 17 tricks and effects. Stone is a genuinely likeable, funny and sometimes goofy and teaches in a clear and easy to understand manner. This DVD has tricks that are good for anyone from beginner to pro, although it is more appropriate for intermediate performers and above. It is a great project that won the endorsement of Jay Sankey.

The project contains a mix of card-trick creations by Stone and some of his pals (Jason Montoya and David Winkler) as well as others (including a very cool Jay Sankey trick with cards and a rubber band). Some of the tricks taught can be done with a borrowed and shuffled deck, some require a slight amount of set-up, some gaff or duplicate cards and even a bit of arts-and-crafts.

Although Stone performs each trick in a studio setting, there are only imagined spectators. I would have liked to have seen him interact with real people as I am sure his patter, taken live, would have been very entertaining.

The trick/effect descriptions from the ad-copy are accurate and need not be repeated here. There are some great moves taught and great ideas presented that no doubt will make it into your arsenal not only in the way presented by Stone, but also for other routines as well. There are a few killer routines that tickled my fancy, including the Target Card, Sardeen Window, Keep your Eye on the Joker, The WTC Move and others.

The DVD menu has all the Presentations in a row, followed by all the Explanations. Additionally there is a Bonus Effects Section and a Gag Reel. Let me just say that the Bonus Effects track contains a trick called the Spectral Chill that is keeping me up at night. The trick is crazy good and even though I know how to perform it, I have no idea how it works. It is mind-boggling. Any beginner can do this trick and look like a pro. The Gag Reel is a bloopers track that is hysterical and made me laugh out loud. Jeff’s sense of humor permeates this DVD in many ways. His split-second screen shots of a can of SPAM, his mock commercials and his joke patter to his pretend spectators in which he pretends he cannot tell if the spectator is a man or a woman. Stone said “I was going for cheeeeeeeeeeeeeesyyyyyyyy - we're talking 1950's sci-fi cheesy. I thought the Spam commercial in between the performance and explanation segment fit the bill.” Well, he nailed it!

I really loved this DVD. It teaches a ton of great magic! Very highly recommended!

PROS

I don’t normally like Ace production routines. They come across like arrogant, “I could cheat you if I wanted to” displays of superiority. I really like his Ace Bandage, Ace production routine. Possibly one of the best four ace productions I have ever seen!

I also really liked his mini hand palming routine. Very clever, very unique.

The midget card routine is awesome! Great routine, great method, great instruction.

The target card: Another great routine.

I guess what I’m saying is there are a lot of really unique, really good routines on this DVD.

The DVD is all card routines, and many REALLY good routines.

CONS

I would really advise magic producers to not perform to try to entertain magicians. Demonstrate how to perform for an audience. You can always tell the difference between patter for magicians and patter for an audience. Patter for magician does things like make jokes about magician moves or makes humor of an imaginary participant “Sir, or ma’am, I’m not sure which you are, take a card.” This is NEVER patter that would be used for an actual audience. DROP the magician patter and get an audience in your studio (home, saloon, park, etc.) so you can demonstrate audience patter.

I think Jeff is a really funny guy, but please, apply your humor to an audience of laypeople, not an audience of magicians.

A lot of effects use the undercut to control a card to the top. This really is not that great of a move, unless there is heavy misdirection. If you place a card in the middle, and cut about half the deck to the top, would the card still be in the middle? This move is only ok with heavy misdirection.

One last thing: the DVD is performance after performance, followed by the explanations. I really wish producers would get the message that DVDs should have performance, explanation, performance, explanation… People want to see the explanation after they have seen the routine.

OK, one more last thing: If you say: “You could do a deck switch”, then teach a deck switch!

VERDICT

OK, I know I ranted a bit. But.. This is a REALLY AWESOME DVD!. I would love to see Jeff apply his humor to audience situations instead of directing it to magicians, but all in all, a great DVD.

I really didn't want to like this DVD. It's all card tricks and starts out with an overly long and indulgent video montage, but near the end my opinion was turned around by a single item. A four ace trick called "Ace Freely." As a standing member of the KISS Army, I'm now duty-bound to give this product a good review.

OK, I'm only kidding, but not about liking this DVD. It's very homey, and Stone is casual and likable, but aside from some occasionally muddy sound its quality is more than adequate and has clearly been produced with quite a bit of care. I particularly enjoyed the interstitial cartoons which are reminiscent of the artwork in early Paul Harris books. And, as previously mentioned, one includes the greatest rock guitarist of all time.

The explanations are clear and there's some crediting sprinkled throughout. The types of tricks you'll learn are heavy on transpositions and color changes, which unfortunately are exactly the type of tricks that make my eyes glaze over. The presentations are unmotivated and expository in nature, making it wearying to watch this entire DVD in one sitting.

Stone Cold Magic costs less than many one-trick DVDs and packs a lot of magic into nearly 3 hours of video. A fair price for a fair product. If this seems like your cup of tea, I think you'll be happy with your purchase.
