Quarter Go

Lippincott

Viking

(Based on 2 reviews)
A borrowed and marked coin vanishes only to appear in a small padlocked box all while in full view.

A spectator marks a borrowed quarter for identification. This is placed within the folds of a handkerchief and held by spectator. Next, a small-padlocked chest (2x2x1) is shown and placed on the spectator's open palm. A magical pass and the hank is whisked away revealing that the coin has vanished. Attention is drawn to the chest, which has been under the spectator's control throughout. He opens the chest himself and finds the marked coin inside.

PROS

I really like this little box. The box is roughly 2 inches by 2 inches by 1.5 inches.

The instructions describe an effect whereby a signed coin vanishes from a handkerchief and appears in the box. However, this box could be used for a card production as well. You would need to use a modified fold, not the standard Mercury fold as the box is just barely too small for a mercury card fold. See the Suggestions section for a really great idea.

The box is gimmicked in a very clever way. What I really like about this is a participant can hold the box and they will not be able to see or find the gimmick. In fact, once the gimmick has been triggered, even you can’t get into the box unless it is unlocked.

CONS

It would have been really nice if the box was about and eighth of an inch larger and then it would hold a Mercury card fold.

VERDICT

Great box that can be used not only for the effect described, but for some really good card effects as well.

Suggestions

If you get “The Box” by Mark Southworth, you can get an idea for how to add such a gimmick to the Quarter Go box and have a great effect similar to “The Box”, but with a locked box. If you don’t have “The Box”, I highly recommend it.

I still love and perform this classic effect. I also see cheaper spin offs, in wood, yes-but Viking is the best version I've seen or handled. The usage of the hank, glass is old yet so effective. If I have a complaint, it's that the lock that comes with the box is cheap-I replaced mine with a miniature Master lock from the hardware store. Pretty reasonable price for what you get.
