D’Puck M’Shra is from India. He is like the Calen Morelli of the East. He is very creative and is super inventive when it comes to organic, modern magic. Capsoul is no exception.
On this DVD you will find a handful of ideas involving a selected card and a hat. You can change the card while it is stuck in your hat, catch a chosen card with your cap or make a card change as it is thrown into your hat. Let’s take a closer look at the DVD.
Flick Change: A card is selected and lost in the deck, an indifferent card is tossed into the air and caught in the magicians cap. Upon closer inspection it has changed into the spectators selection.The gimmick for this is a piece of cake to make, it is takes just a few seconds and is easy enough to do that you could easily make it up in a bind or on the fly. This is probably the hardest effect to get down on the DVD but it is very possible and worth the time. There is not another effect like this out there. The card morphs into the selection in mid air, and it is completely examinable before and after.
Flick Change Variation: Chris, on the trailer, performs a version of the effect where he turns a card invisible and tosses it into his hat where it materializes. I work at a couple venues outside where I wear a hat depending on the weather. This handling is not explained on the DVD but it is easy to figure out once you understand the flick change. This is the handling that I will be using. I already perform Calen Morelli’s card to hat and this will be an easy addition.
Trapped: This is basically a card stab using a hat. A spectator selects a card, it is lost in the deck, the pack is thrown in the air and the magician catches the spectators card in their hat. They compare this to a card sword and I believe that it is superior in almost every way. It is cheaper, up to date, organic, good on stage, doesn’t destroy the selection, and easier to make examinable than the classic card sword. I will be using this in my stand up show.
I-Tap: The magician shows that he has tucked a card under their hat. A selection is made and it doesn’t match, with a shake the card changes while it is tucked under the hat. This looks great, I can see it working for a video montage but personally I wouldn’t use it in the real world. After the card changes of course you can give it out but the gimmick modifies the hat considerably. Where the gimmick for the Flick Change can easily be removed during performance, the I-Tap gimmick is more permanent.
Alternative Presentation 1 For I-Tap: A card is selected and held by the spectator, the card is displayed in the hat. With a tap it changes places with the card held by the spectator. This uses the same gimmick and handling as I-Tap and adds a classic move. I like the idea of a transpo with this, it makes the classic transpo that much more visual.
Alternative Presentation 2 For I-Tap: This is the exact same effect as Alternative Presentation 1 but this allows you to set up the gimmick as you perform. This allows you to have an instant reset for the transpo.
They don’t explain how, but the Flick Change gimmick is very easy to clean up on an off-beat, as you go for your attache case, or even if you relax with the hat off it would be easy to slip the gimmick into a jacket. It also is easy enough to reset in a couple seconds or could be worn for a long period of time before or after performing the effect. Both gimmicks could easily be put in a cowboy hat, fedora, top hat or baseball hat depending on your style.
There has been some worry that the spectator will want to examine the hat. I think of it almost like a card to wallet or card to shoe. I have never had any problems with people wanting to check out these props and see no reason for the spectator to try to check out the hat. On top of that I have performed Calen Morelli’s card to hat for quite a while and have never had any problems, given that experience, I feel like with minimal crowd management will make this effect very performable.
It’s too bad that they couldn’t get the actual creator to perform the magic. Janson was fine but at times he seemed a little inexperienced and his presentation was a little cheesy. They had a performance in the studio for almost every handling but there weren’t any uncut live performances. The only live performances they had were on the trailer.
This is an easy to do, versatile effect that will work close up as well as on stage. If you are looking for a modern card stab or a color change that happens in your hat then I don’t know why you wouldn’t purchase this DVD.
