52 Shades of Red

Shin Lim

(Based on 2 reviews)
Shin lim has performed with this gaff deck in front of thousands of lay audiences around the world. For years he has considered this his secret weapon. He is now sharing it with you...

Prepare yourself to harness the greatest gaff deck ever produced!

From the mind of Shin Lim, comes a gaff deck so advanced that you will appear to do miracles with your bare hands.

This exciting 2 DVD set comes with a gaffed deck, gimmicks and 8 full routines!

Some of the routines included:

52 shades of red: This is the featured routine shin uses in his professional stage act. It is the cleanest possible color changing deck ever conceived. Imagine showing every single Blue Card in the deck. Next, you turn the cards over and show the pips of every single card. On your command the deck changes from blue into red. You turn once again to show the face of every single card is now blank. (A live performance of 52 shades of red was recorded in Beijing China and is shown on the DVD.) This act alone is worth the price of the DVD package.

Color changing box: possibly one of the cleanest color changing box effects ever. The audience sees all sides of a blue box. And with just a wave or toss (whichever you prefer) the card box changes into a red box of playing cards. Again, you can show every single side of the box cleanly.

Impossible card vanish/color change: The title explains it all. Imagine cleanly showing two jokers and an ace of hearts. The spectators can also examine the cards if you want them to. You then place the ace in between the two jokers and in a split second the ace vanishes cleanly in between the 2 jokers. You can show all sides of the jokers. Shin teaches you how to use the same gimmick in order to perform one of the cleanest color changes anyone can perform.

Bonus section: Imagine showing 4 aces that are blue backed. With just a wave, they turn into 4 kings that are red backed. Also included in the DVD shin teaches you how to vanish an entire pack of cards in an extremely clean manner.

This is slick. This is heavily produced. This is also a very impractical color changing deck routine. Don’t get me wrong, it’s very magical, and deceptive for the most part, but I just don’t know where anyone other than Shin Lim would do this routine.

He does it to music, in a theater, on a special table, with a projection screen. This is the perfect scenario where the audience can’t reach out and grab the cards, or ask to examine them.

Shin Lim shows us a performance video, but says that it’s not quite the regular routine he does, so he gives us a URL so we can see another video online. If he’s doing this, why did we just spend over fifty bucks for THIS two disc set?

All this said, there are some very magical moments that fooled me, and the sleight of hand was all very entertaining. The teaching was very clear, and he even shows you how to construct most of the gimmicks, with a few minor exceptions. For example, one phase uses a marketed gimmick that is not his, so he does not teach how to make that gimmick, but he does show an alternative handling.

My big issue is that the routine does not work for most real world conditions. There are lots of angles, lighting restrictions, and other specific performance conditions you will need if you want to perform the magic exactly as seen in the video.

If you are an intermediate card enthusiast, you will probably get an idea or two to work on. I don’t think you will get much performance use out of this stuff, but if you are a fan of this kind of magic, I don’t think you can be that disappointed with this. Another product I have to go right down the middle on.

Let me start by saying I loved this DVD. The Magic demonstrated here can only be described as "appears to be trick photography". Shin Lim is brilliant and his routines are breath taking and at a young age somewhat unexpected. His creativity alone is stand alone and I've never seen anything like it before. Having that been said I will tell you why I gave this an under five star rating.

For those of you not familiar with Shin Lim's work as I wasn't the tricks you do are as advertised. However the setup and how you prepare the trick (gimmicks) are a tad extensive and tedious. Some effects are angle sensitive and not all that practical to perform. One thing for sure is the explanation for every routine is crystal clear and he does a great job going over exactly what is necessary to execute each one. One small thing I noticed is the full demonstration he shows in the trailer is not fully explained, but a comparable version is explained. I felt that he left that out entirely just so you wouldn't shadow his routine trick for trick. However with practice and enough imagination you are supplied with enough material to come close to his award winning routine.

Aside from the extent of labor required to put together your gaffs, with a little patience you have a miracle in your hands. The amount of magic is highly impact full and packs small. The amount of sleight of hand is not difficult although he explains what you need to do step by step I didn't feel it was in depth. I felt as if it was expected the Magician performing has knowledge on sleight of hand and the focus was purely on the gimmicks and handling of such gimmicks.

In closing I want to say this set is as I described earlier very brilliant. The rewards you receive from your audience is satisfying. The effects will make any Magician (beginner or professional) look impressive!
