This three-DVD set begins like much of the mentalism I've seen - with endless talk and nothing happening. Fortunately, unlike much of the mentalism I've seen, in this case the viewer is soon rewarded for his patience with many strong and engaging effects, all by Toronto's Haim Goldenberg (Guy Bavli moderates the explanations and interviews). My favorites offer relatively contemporary plots carried out by simple (but deceptive) means - "Animated Magnet," in which the performer draws a magnet on an index card, then puts the pen on the table, whereupon, when the "magnet" is brought near, the pen slides towards it; "Coinci-Cube," a routine in which both a spectator and the mentalist mix their own Rubik's Cubes behind their backs, whereupon the mentalist manages to psychically (or by photographic memory, if you prefer) duplicate the layout of the spectator's cube; "Video Rental," in which a spectator names his favorite movie, whereupon the mentalist calls his neighborhood rental outlet and asks the employee who answers the name of the movie he reserved earlier that day - naturally, it's a match; "Stop Smoking," a demonstration of hypnosis wherein a smoker is "influenced" to suddenly find his (or her) own cigarette smoke disgusting (this is so convincing I could see it being employed as a con by faith healers); and "My Precious," wherein the mentalist divines which of four finger rings belong to which of four spectators after the rings are dropped into coin purses, then mixed.

The remaining effects - a drawing duplication, a demonstration of hand-writing analysis, a number prediction, a divination of what position a chosen card occupies after the deck has been shuffled, and more - offer practical, performable methods for established plots.

If these DVDs were sold separately, I would recommend Volume II over the others, but since you can only buy them as a set, it's a non-issue. One thing that is an issue, however, is the noticeable lack of crediting that pervades all three discs, even to one such as myself who is not intimately familiar with everything on record in mental magic. Haim apologizes for this at the end of Volume 1, stating that he is not a person who "reads books" or "watches other mentalists," but there are effects and methods on these DVDs with reams of precedent, and it's irresponsible of him not to have either a) Determined whether he was duplicating other people's work, or b) Informed us of how his versions differ from other people's work. I expect we'll be hearing from the keepers on this.
