Overview

The Devil’s Hank gimmick is a cloth sewn to look like a men’s handkerchief but can be used to vanish, produce or switch small objects. The original idea was probably created in France in 1876 and was called “Le Mouchoir du Diable (The Handkerchief of the Devil). There isn’t much to the construction of this particular gimmick but there are some distinct differences once you have seen a couple up close. One of the most important aspects of a Devils Hank is the inability for the audience to detect the vanished object within the folds of the cloth. The choice of fabric is most important in this case. Thus, transparent or excessively shiny fabrics telegraph that the object is inside the handkerchief. Although secondary but still important is the style of the handkerchief. Gaudy and flashy fabrics are certainly not desirable especially if the handkerchief is worn as it should be, protruding from the left breast pocket of a suit or jacket.

Effect

The performer borrows a small object such as a ring or even a smaller watch. He folds up his handkerchief and very clearly drops the borrowed object without the folds of the handkerchief. With a brisk flick, the handkerchief is opened and the object is gone. Of course, after some byplay, the object miraculously reappears.

Method

The method of course is a gimmicked handkerchief sewn to accommodate the insertion of the borrowed object. There isn’t much to the gimmick itself but one should definitely practice folding, removing the handkerchief from the pocket, finding the proper corner and making the object disappear. Equal
time should be spent on properly retrieving the object as well.

Product Quality

The handkerchief is well made and is stylish as well. The fabric is nice to the touch and does not telegraph the object hidden within. Obviously, the smaller the object the possibility of detection is minimized. Unlike most TCC items, there is no video instruction for this item. I personally was disappointed because if this was purchased by someone who had no experience with a Devils Hank they may be perplexed as to how it works. In addition, there is no indication on the box that this is a TCC item. Certainly a 15 minute video could have been produced to go over basic moves.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is basic at best and is accurate. The asking price for a handkerchief of this quality is more than fair but I would have liked to have an instructional video with this trick.
