Photo Shock

Sankey, Jay

Sankey Magic

(Based on 1 review)
The performer introduces a photograph with a $10 bill wrapped around it. A playing card is freely selected (and it really is a free choice - they can touch ANY card they want.) The card is left sticking out of the pack and the performer explains that in the photo, there's also one card sticking out of a deck of cards. And if the card in the photo doesn't match the spectator's selected card, they get to keep the money. But when the photo is revealed, everybody sees that the card in the photo is face down! So, while the spectator holds the photo, the magician performs a double impossibility. Not only does the card in the photo turn face up, it also matches the freely selected card. And the photo CAN be closely examined.
  • Only one photo is involved. No switches!
  • Extremely portable
  • Basic sleight-of-hand
  • Angle-Proof
  • 10 second reset

Overview

One of the most polarizing creators in magic has to be Jay Sankey. There are those that laud him and many that loath him. Whichever camp you are in, you will be pleased to know that Photo-shock will deliver an easy to do, magical effect using a photo that will entertain your spectators and deliver a magical effect they will never forget.

Effect

A spectator is asked to pick a card and the card is turned over and stuck halfway, face up in the face down deck. The performer then blithely states that he knew they would pick that exact card. He then produces a photo wrapped in a bill (any denomination that suits your style) and states that if his prediction is incorrect, they can keep the money. The bill is removed and the photo is shown with a card sticking halfway out of the deck but face down. Of course, everyone laughs at the gag but the performer insists that it is their card. He places the photo face down on the spectator’s hand and confidently states the money is still his and insists they turn the photo over. As they do, they see the face down card in the photo has now turned face up and it truly does match their chosen card.

Method

The method uses a force and a gimmicked photo. The handling is so natural and the moves are so justified there will be no heat on the photo at all. The gimmick is small and easily handled by any magician regardless of the size of their hands. As with many Sankey releases, the magic is not convoluted but easily understood. Simple handlings with no unnecessary movements is what Sankey is known for.

Product Quality

The photos provided allows for you to choose a few different force cards and red or blue Bicycle decks. They are printed on sturdy card stock and Sankey explains how to make customized gimmicks if you use different decks. He also suggests using these as master photo and have copies made to allow a lifetime of gimmicks as eventually they will wear. The quality of the photos is good. The DVD instructional runs a half hour with very little superfluous talking. Sankey covers three basic forces and how to reveal the kicker ending. The video is brief but thorough. There is a bonus routine which is also great call Photo-finish and it is a good ending for the first trick if you can casually set up the deck for it.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is correct but as a word of caution, the reset has to be done without anyone looking. You won’t have to hide but done as you are walking along. It is truly 10 seconds or less. Photo Shock is a nice, easy to do memorable effect.
