Overview

Do you find comfort in being in a constant state of confusion? Do you find solace not knowing why things are happening? Do you enjoy being confused and thinking what am I doing here? If you do, then buy The Attic is in My Chest by Dominique Duvivier. If you don’t, I would avoid this DVD set like the plague.

Effect

The Attic is in My Chest is a collection of 12 card routines by Dominique Duvivier. I wish I can say more about them but I couldn’t get past the first couple of routines. Perhaps the issue is cultural, perhaps he has a very unique style but in the end I couldn’t follow why he was doing what he was doing or what the premise was for each trick. I’m sure there was a reason he was performing them but it was lost in the translation, figuratively and literally.

Method

Sitting through endless shuffles, cuts and flourishes, it was hard to understand where each trick was leading. It seemed in the end that all these amount to be is “I found your card” even with all this maneuvering. The endless moves were only surpassed by his incessant babble. Luckily, when translated from the French to English, it wasn’t word for word. That being said, flourishes, slights, false cuts, false deals, etc. are the methods used to create his magic. This DVD is not for the general card man or the faint of heart.

Product Quality

The DVD is difficult to navigate. When you click on a selection, it plays and ends abruptly mid-sentence. The structure is difficult to watch, and difficult to follow. The filming is average being filmed live at a lecture.

Ad Copy Integrity

If one has the patience to sit through the constant talking, frenetic shuffling, endless cutting of the deck and strange antics and facial expressions Duvivier does throughout the performances one may get something out of this.

Final Thoughts

I am not sure why this is called The Attic in my Chest. Was it poorly translated from The Chest is in my Attic? Was this done intentionally or by accident? Either way, the strange title forebodes what is in store for you on these DVDs. Strange indeed.
