The performer borrows a spectator's 14 carat diamond ring. "Fear not", he tells her, "I will protect it with my life".

So saying, the performer carefully removes a handkerchief from his pocket and wraps the ring, giving it to the spectator to hold. Standing back and gesturing majestically, performer announces triumphantly, "Behold, the ring has vanished". Performer reaches over, grabs the corner of the handkerchief and orders the spectator to "LET GO!"

And now, CW brings you a performer's worst nightmare: The performer whisks away the corner of the handkerchief, and the ring goes bouncing offstage into the wings at the speed of light. It can actually be heard ping-ponging around the stage.

Momentarily shaken, the performer turns to off-stage helper, "Put a man on it, will you fellows?" Smiling bravely, performer continues, "Tell you what. Because you've been such a good sport, it seems only fair that I reward you with a prize. I think you'll agree that simply writing a check would be tasteless and crass. So, let me buy you a few gumball prizes. They're really quite wonderful. Granted, some of them are plastic. But twenty-five years from now you'll probably have a collector's item and a terrific story to tell. Yours was a pretty large ring, so I'll buy you three of them."

Performer continues: "Here you go, and I'll even supply the quarters". The performer reaches in his pocket and gives, the spectator a quarter. "Here, put this in the machine and turn the handle". Spectator does so, and the little vending machine obligingly delivers the well-known plastic bubble containing a gift that may run the gamut of your imagination, depending on your audience.

(At this point, stagehand yells in, "Uh, we found a ring, but there's no stone in it -- Could that be the one?" Performer pushes on bravely. "Splendid, you've won a tiny little bottle of mouth wash. (or whatever is inside the bubble.) But that's not all. I promised you three gifts - here's another quarter. Take another shot at it.

This time the spectator receives yet another worthless trinket. "My, you're doing very well here, this could end up an even exchange. What did you get this time? Oh, that's nice... O.k. my last quarter and your last chance to hit the big time. Imagine taking three lovely prizes home in exchange for your damaged ring. Here's your last quarter".

The spectator drops in the last coin and gives the handle a crank. Out pops another plastic bubble. This time, to the amazment of all, the bubble contains the spectator's original ring and all ends well.

This is one of CW's classic routines that requires a bare minimum of skill so you can concentrate on the comedy and presentation. The premise is a killer, the comedy by-play all you could ask for and the prop, the finest quality.
