Product Description

Sleight of hand magic is perhaps the most technically demanding of all areas of performance magic, and perhaps the most rewarding. One must have both drive and diligence to perform sleight of hand magic. I meet many magicians who have the desire to be a great manipulator, but they work on their excuses more than on their technique....

“My hands are too small,” or “My hands don’t work as well as they used to,” or, “I don’t have the time to practice manipulation as much as I would like to.”

I have offered up this material for the magician who has only limited skill or time to practice. Often, complicated sleight of hand routines take many months or years of practice before you can experience the results. These routines and effects are designed with minimum practice involved, and almost immediate results. Routines like these do take some practice, but will give you more rewards than blisters, more “wows” than “ouches.” The manipulation exercises and effects are here to help you build confidence, and perhaps will trick you into becoming a sleight of hand artist.

“Many times I hear from students of mine or from magicians at conventions, ‘I’d love to do manipulation but my hands aren’t big enough,’ or ‘I don’t have enough time to practice,’ or ‘my hands don’t work the way they used to...’ All of these are just excuses.”

Jeff McBride, from the Introduction to Manipulation Without Tears

With that in mind, and in an effort to empower rather than judge, Jeff McBride has compiled a collection of manipulation techniques that he refers to as “confidence-building exercises.” However, unlike musical scales, for example, these “exercises” can actually be performed for an audience.

Indeed, what I like most about this DVD is that the material is taught with the emphasis on performance, rather than just mechanics. Moreover, while it’s a basic course in manipulation (cards, coins, balls), it isn’t condescending in the way that teaching tools directed at beginners can often be. In other words, Jeff...
