This is probably one of the most famous escapes of all time and yet it is one of the easiest to perform. A steel chain, padlock and key are passed for examination. A spectator now binds the magician wrists with the chain which is pulled very tight and then padlocked. In a split second the performer is able to free himself from the chain and everything can be examined. The escape can be performed visibly if desired or it can be used to demonstrate how Houdini used to ‘dematerialise’ himself.
