Effect

Self-Working Mental Magic is a book of 67 mental-magic mysteries. The tricks are based on traditional mentalism techniques as well as little known psychological ploys. Each trick was chosen amaze and entertain the average spectator(s).

Method

The book is broken down into nine categories in which the 67 tricks are roughly categorized. Each category has several tricks that share a similar theme. The categories span the gamut of mentalism premises such as ESP, Mind Reading With Cards, Book Tests, Slates and other traditional themes.

Product Quality

The book is of standard paperback quality. As in many of these compilation type books, the method is explained sans the performance and dialogue. It will be up to the individual to add color to the performance based on their character and personality. The effects given are not unlike effects in other books such as Practical Mental Magic. Do not become deterred by equating the quality of the routines with the price of the book. Many of the routines were contributions by professional performers or extracted from public domain literature on mentalism and mental magic.

Ad Copy Integrity

As claimed, the book contains the stated routines and many others. Unlike other magic fields, mentalism does not have as many premises. Because of such the book offers up as many viable routines as more expensive volumes out there. Self-Working Mental Magic is a good grounding book for the neophyte mentalist and if you are a more experienced mentalist, you may find a nugget of gold hidden within the pages as well.

I picked this book up at a used book sale earlier this year and I was very pleasantly surprised at the effects I found in here. This is one of those books that has some very simple to do yet stunning effects. A few of my favorites are:

The Blindfolded Deck on pg 3
This is a super easy effect where the magician predicts what card a spectator will cut to.
Teleportation on pg42
A transposition effect using nothing more than a borrowed bill and a sealed envelope.
There is a lot more. Some of the effects didn't appeal to me personally but everybody should be able to find at least 2 or 3 good usable effects.
