Two round plastic plates are shown. One of the plates has a small round hole drilled through. The "solid" plate is placed on top of a glass. Next, a small round checker is placed on top of the plate. The checker is covered with the second plate (the one with the tiny hole in it). That way, you can keep your eye on the checker at all times. Now, for the magic -- The two plates are grasped and given a little squeeze. Suddenly, the checker penetrates through the bottom plate and falls into the glass.
